Mosaic knitting creates a beautiful fabric that is great for snuggly blankets, squishy sweaters and other cozy items. The technique, which uses slipped stitches, looks complicated but it is so easy to learn. It is an ideal starting point for beginners who would like to try colorwork and working with charts. Seasoned stitchers will also marvel at the elegance and simplicity of mosaic knitting. Knitting legend Barbara Walker created this beautiful style of colorwork in the 1960’s. In this class, we’ll work together to create two swatches in both stockinette and garter stitch using a chart from her innovative book Mosaic Knitting.

Skills required: Knowledge of knit and purl stitch

Supplies:

  • Two (2)charts for Mosaic #8 (provided in class materials)
  • Two (2) contrasting-color worsted yarns (MC and CC) approx. 120 yards each. (Brooklyn Tweed Shelter)
  • Straight or circular knitting needles in a size you like for knitting worsted weight yarn flat – US 6, US 7 or US 8
  • Six stitch markers: two of one type, 3 of another, another unique marker to show the RS of the work
  • Preferred method to count rows – row counter, pencil and paper etc.
  • Tape measure
  • Piece of paper or cardstock to cover the top part of the chart while you are working

Pre-work:

  • We will be making two(2) swatches in this class.
  • Cast-on 35 stitches with one color (MC) two times; one cast-on for each swatch, each cast-on on a separate needle.
  • If you only have one set of needles in your desired size, you can either use another needle one size up or down or put one cast-on on a stitch holder.
  • Long-tail cast on is ideal, but you may use your preferred method.
  • Purl one row.
  • Gauge is not essential for this project.
  • Please have this ready at the beginning of class.
